Things You Need To Know About Tax Preparation Hawaii

By Harold Wagner

Imagine living in a paradise surrounded by rugged landscapes, blue waters, and white sands. Living in Hawaii is heavenly, but it may come at a steep price especially when you consider the tax preparation Hawaii processes. If you want to live in this veritable paradise, you will need to be prepared to file state income tax returns as well as federal tax returns.

Living in paradise comes at a cost, and for Hawaii residents, this cost comes in the form of income state and federal tax returns. That is right; you have to file tax returns twice a year. While at it, you will also need to be prepared to deal with as many as twelve tax brackets when submitting your returns.

Taxes within the state are regulated by a single department. The Hawaii Department of Taxation has offices spread out in different counties in the state to make it easier for residents to file their returns. All taxes, including but not limited to income tax, property tax, and general excise tax are filed with this particular department.

Residents in the state have some breathing room after the expiry of the Federal Tax Day. However, you should make sure that you have filed your tax returns by the 22nd day of April each year. For those that are unable to file by this date, they can always request for an extension. The six-month extension is normally given to people who already owe the department back taxes.

It is not unusual for the taxation department to provide an extension of up to six months to people who owe taxes. However, note that this extension may come with extra charges. The state will charge a penalty of 5 percent for failing to pay your taxes on time. It will also continue to charge you an interest for each month that you do not remit what you owe.

Filing status tends to complicate the whole process of submitting the tax returns. Many are not sure what to expect when dealing with state and federal tax returns. But the good thing is that the statuses are the same for both state and federal income returns. You will encounter the same set of information on both forms. Information available on the forms pertains to marital status, whether you have kids, and whether you are filing alone or with a spouse.

As stated earlier, Hawaii uses a progressive tax system. Residents will, as such, fall into one of the 12 tax brackets defined by the state. The brackets are arrived at after calculating your taxable income and your filing status. If unsure about how to proceed, it is recommended that you seek the services of a tax expert, as these two factors can make the entire process more complicated.

The taxation department provides e-filing services for those looking to file individual income tax via its e-portal. You can also use a tax professional to file your federal and income tax returns or via the use of a tax preparation software. The software to use has been listed on the official departmental website.
