The walls offer a sense of privacy that they enjoy.

People who have unique lifestyles that they intend to promote also live in such like areas. By living in such areas, they meet people who think like them and hence advance a certain way of living together. Some people also view gates as a source of prestige. They feel important living in walled community.

Critics of these kinds of living environments have argued that they present a false sense of security. Statistics have shown that crime rate inside them is as high as that in other non-gated areas. By the fact that traffic is low inside the walls, crime is increased. Increased traffic serves to deter criminal behavior and the people can also be helpful during an incident.
