Certification And Licensing For A Certified Public Accountant

By Richard Davis

A certified accountant is a term for those who are being qualified as accountants. They need to pass the accountant examination and they will need to meet the additional education and experiences as requirements for their membership and for them to get their certification as a CPA. For those who have not passed the exam and were not being able to have an on the job experience are requested to have a CPA inactive status.

A lot of states have prohibited the usage of certified accountant terms to people who are not yet verified to be a CPA of state. And this would literally mean that they cannot be called like that until such time that they can obtain their certificate or their license. Certified public accountant San Luis Obispo is related to the assurance services or financial audit services as it is usually called as.

An individual must be able to pass the exam which is the Uniform CPA Exam to become certified. The state boards of accountancy will be the one to determine the eligibility of a student to take the exam. All places adopt to the 150 rule. This rule means that the student must accomplish 150 units in their college semester.

This rule often requires another year of education aside from the four years degree. Most universities are offering this 5 years bachelors and masters degree, thus, this will allow the students to earn both degrees at the same time. Also, the students will be receiving the 150 hours needed for the eligibility of exam.

Certification requirements and as well as for licensing are needed also, but it will depend on the state. The requirements are experience, education, and examination. Requirements for education must be accomplished for the students to take uniform examination. For the states which are two tier, when students will pass the exam, they will be given the certificate immediately. And when they can fulfill the working experience given amount, they will be given the license.

While in other states, they are using the one tier system wherein an individual is both certified and licensed at the same time when both the exam and working experience have been met. Unlike other professionals, the accountants are required to have a continuous education for courses towards the development of continuous professionalism. The requirements for this varies in different states.

In some states, they may require a 40 hour professional ethics every one year. And this may be fulfilled through involving in seminars and self studying through watching videos, online courses, or textbooks. This means to say that the board may accept and credit requirements which are internet based and also credits self studying.

There are also a lot of other designations in states who have a lower tier of qualifications. Some of their terms include public accountant or licensed public accountant. Other titles also include accounting practitioner and registered accounting practitioner.

These are the terms which are usually assigned for the licensing of non CPA accountants. These are the accountants that practiced before the state of law. In most places, they are prohibiting these designations of LPA or PA to a person who is not yet verified as a PA in that place.
