If you want to be an insurance agent who does not belong to a particular company, then you would definitely need to know what you are getting yourself into. You would have to be aware of what it takes to be successful in this field. Otherwise, you would only be putting all your time and effort into waste.

The first thing that you need to do is to acquire college education. Thus, it would certainly do you well if you let professors teach you the basics in business law, business administration and marketing.

Now, if the law of your state indicates that you would have to be involved in continuing courses in order for you to keep your license, then you have no choice but to adhere to that law. Now, the first characteristic that an independent agent should have is flexibility. You must be able to meet your client at any time of the day. You should also be willing to see them in a place that is not your comfort zone.

As an agent, you are actually required to be enthusiastic with your work too. Otherwise, people would lose interest in you. Keep in mind that you must be able to convince individuals to get your insurance policy and one of the ways to do that is to show to them that you completely love what you are doing.

Be extremely confident as well. Act and speak in a way that people would have no choice but to listen to what you have to say. Try not to stutter so much in front of your customers and never allow your clients to think that you know nothing about insurance.

As for your main tasks as an agent, you actually need to keep track of all your transactions. Be able to keep them in a place that is completely secured. You would certainly be needing these records in instances where in your customers are having complains with the policy that you have sold to them.

Now, if your customers desire to see a report about the policies that you are providing, then be able to give them with what they need. Talk to a professional who have already done this before. Never rush into making the report unless necessary because you might end up losing the deal in return.
