How To Detect Counterfeit Bills

By Jason McDonald

Have you ever been handed a dollar bill, either by a cashier, teller, or someone you know personally, only to believe that it may not be legitimate? Counterfeit bills are more common than you think, and there are many people that don't know how to detect them. Fortunately, the ways to know if a bill is fake are simpler than you think. For those that would like to learn more about this financial topic, here are a few tips that Robert Jain can provide.

There are many ways to detect counterfeit bills, but let's start with the printing. As names such as Bob Jain will tell you, authentic dollar bills have raised printing, which you will be able to detect when you run your finger across the ink. The rougher the ink in question feels to the touch, the more likely it is that said bill is legitimate. Otherwise, you may have been given a false bill without realizing it.

A watermark is one of the most common signs of bill authenticity. For those that don't know, a watermark is an image of the individual printed on the bill itself. Furthermore, it can only be seen when held up to light. Check the right side of the bill, as this is where said watermark is located. If you're unable to see it, or the image doesn't match up to what's printed, the bill is counterfeit.

Did you know that authentic dollar bills tend to have security threads printed on them? These are black or blue lines that run across one side of each bill, and their location depends on the specific type of bill being examined. While a $5 or $20 bill will have a thread located on the left, a $10 will have a thread situated on the right. This ensures a level of security, not only in terms of bill authenticity but peace of mind for those that are careful about money in general.

These are just a few ways to know how to detect a counterfeit bill, no matter where you shop, live, or what have you. Anyone can become the owner of counterfeit money without realizing it, so it pays to be knowledgeable. With enough information in mind, you will be able to detect false bills and pass them along to the proper authorities. Even if you only detect a false bill here and there, understand that it will make a difference.
