The Importance Of Dental Insurance Plans For Seniors

By David Peterson

Older people have special health needs that younger people may not experience. Tooth care needs are one of those issues. Some may think that these issues are only experienced by younger people and children. But that is not necessarily the case. Seniors have special needs that may or may not be common with younger people. This means it is advisable to have dental insurance plans for seniors. Most plans discount the overall cost by a significant portion.

One thing that affects the need for such services is the amount of dental care and hygiene that has be practiced throughout the person's life. Care and hygiene that has been neglected early on can lead to the appearance of problems later. Some of these problems include such things as uneven jawbone caused by tooth loss, caused in part by early neglect. Such neglect can also give rise to root decay and gum disease. Another problem that may arise at any time, but particularly in later years, is oral cancer. Fillings come out and crowns may be lost at any time, including old age.

The plan from the Federal Health Marketplace at healthcare.gov can be obtained when purchasing a medical plan from them. There are no federal subsidies available for these, however. A very few state-run marketplaces allow a stand-alone purchases without purchasing a medical plan. Also, some brokers, agents and insurance companies provide plans for purchase.

Medicare doesn't supply coverage except where dental and medical needs intersect. Some Medicare Advantage programs allow coverage, but most are at a minimal amount per year. Medicaid, supplied to low income persons, may or may not include dental insurance. One must check with their state's plan, and check whether it is a federal sponsored program or a state one. Each state decides whether they offer dental coverage or not.

Another option that provides a significant discount is the dental savings plan. They provide service from 30% to 60% off. Different plans and providers provide different options. All are available without caps on the amount of coverage, and no claims are required as the dentist charges the agreed upon amount. Service is available immediately, meaning you never have to wait for needed service.

There is a wide variety of costs between all the plans. The least expensive is the savings plan. I has very low fees in reference to the others. Those available with the Affordable Care Act are pretty inexpensive, though not the lowest available. Private fees have a wider variety between them, varying from the highest to a relatively low fee. Plans vary based on deductibles, co-pays, and services provided, as well as the provider used. However, they will all be less that paying full price for services.

There are several things to consider when shopping for plans. One is currently the condition of your teeth. If you have a lot of potential visits to the dentist, you should consider getting coverage of some sort. Another thing to consider is the cost for each plan, as well as the services provided. Though there is no guarantee as to what you will need in the future, you can anticipate and make sure those services are provided by the plan you choose.

There are a lot of expenses associated with aging. Though finances may not be a major problem at present, just know that any expenses that can be anticipated and provided for will avoid financial stress in the future. Also, lack of finances also sometimes prevent a person getting adequate care.
