Medicare is a federal government administered insurance plan with some of its funding coming from the taxes of citizens. Being enrolled on it will give health coverage to you which would pay for the majority of your expenses when you need medical attention. This is dependent though on the parts you have enrolled because each one of them have a different service.

Determine if you qualify to have these benefits which you can get enrolled automatically when you turn sixty five. Others can get enrolled automatically if they have disabilities and are receiving disability benefits from Social Security. Examples of people who need to sign up are those not receiving any benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board. This happens usually because they are currently working still and have a health plan based on their employment. You must ask your employer if you are required to enroll with Medicare when you turn sixty five.

This is the same when you are over sixty five but still have an employer coverage then no need to do anything yet. It also applies when the one working is your spouse and you are both covered by the plan based on their employment. After this, you can apply during the Special Enrollment Period without paying any late enrollment penalty.

The initial enrollment period only have seven months starting three months before your birth month, which is also included, plus three months after. The special period thought starts at the month which your employment has ended. It could be also at the month when your employer coverage health plan has ended as well.

You could apply for this through filling up an application form and passing it online on the website of Social Security. This can also be done by calling for assistance their hotline number or visiting the local office within your area. There is no need in doing this every year though a chance to review and change your plans is there.

There are things to do when on your first year of having Medicare and this starts by filling up your authorization form. This will allow your friends or family to call them for you whenever you are in no condition to do so. Your information on personal health can not be given to any person with a written permission from you first.

Make a preventive visit appointment within the following twelve months since you started which is free and only needed once. This will review your medical and social history and gives counsel on preventive services. They will measure your height, weight and blood pressure and calculate your body max index among other things.

You can then sign up for the secure online service where your personal Medicare information can be accessed any time. This will help you in tracking down your health care claims, order a replacement card and track your preventive services. You would also be given a list of the tests, items or services that are covered with this.
