Contacts That Are Like Sunglasses

By Chet Sandeksi

Retinal detachment is a serious eye condition that if not treated within 24-78 hours can cause permanent damage to your vision. It happens when the back layer of your eye, your retina, separates from the support tissue around it. A detached retina can be brought on by an eye injury. It can also happen without warning, so it's important to know the symptoms, treatments, and ways to prevent it.

While there are few options to reverse macular degeneration of any kind, those who have been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration can take action for themselves to lower the chance of complete vision loss. The following few tips and suggestions will more than likely require an aging person to change their lifestyle in some ways, which can always be difficult, but recent studies have shown than enacting these few changes can significantly decrease the likelihood of losing all of one's sight due to age-related macular degeneration.

One of the first changes that will have to be made by some is to finally kick the habit of smoking. Smoking has been shown to increase the chances of progressing age-related macular degeneration by two to three times, meaning conversely that those who can quit smoking will be able to lower their likelihood of vision loss by the same high percentage.

For those who do not smoke or who have worked to quit smoking, another possibly difficult life change can be enacted to further lessen the chances of vision loss-a better diet. Eating healthy is always a good idea to improve the health of any organ or function of the body, but eating food rich in antioxidants especially can help with retinal health.

Sometimes an eye injury can cause retinal detachment. If you have had an eye injury, and it's accompanied by any of the symptoms above, you need to make sure your doctor knows so he or she can act accordingly. If there is a tear in your retina, this can turn into a detachment if not treated. A tear isn't exactly the same as a detached retina, but it can lead to the retina separating from the surrounding tissue as well.

You have to have them packed wherever you go and then you have to remember to put them on when you go out into the sunlight. Using contacts that double as sunglasses is ideal because they will already be on your eyes and you won't have to worry about whether they match with the other things you're wearing.

Preventing retinal detachment, You can lower your chances of a retinal detachment by going to an eye doctor regularly. Make sure you get an eye exam once a year, and more often if you have an eye condition.

In a similar stance, most doctors are now suggesting that people wear sunglasses and hats to shield their eyes during sunny days. Here again there is not a scientific link to sunlight exposure and AMD, but protecting the eyes from the sun may be beneficial in slowing the advancement of AMD.

Corrective surgeries and cornea transplants may be an option for some with age-related macular degeneration, but extensive consultation with medical professionals is advised before undertaking such action. If surgery is deemed appropriate, one should be sure to have vision health insurance to go along with their normal health coverage so that more of the costs of eye care can be covered.
